At dawn Oct. 19, 2011, riot police began clearing out one of the largest encampments of gypsies in England. The nearly 1,000 travellers (a group of Irish itinerants and Roma peoples) of Dale Farm, near Basildon, had fought for 10 years to stay on the six-acre site, a former scrap yard that became their home.
A court ruling gave local officials the go-ahead to remove the illegal dwellers, which led to violent clashes between authorities and the squatters. (see all the photos here)
