As LIFE noted at the time, designer Rudi Gernreich’s infamous topless bathing suit of 1964 was more a Pop Art joke than a practical garment or lasting fashion trend. Still, he managed to sell a few thousand of them, and LIFE’s Paul Schutzer published one of the few frontal shots of someone wearing one (although starlet Daphne Dayle preserved some modesty and anonymity by keeping her head above water).
