As President Barack Obama and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney wind up their 2012 campaigns for the White House, it all comes down to Ohio.
Ohio’s reputation as a critical win for any presidential candidate is hardly new. In 1944, LIFE magazine devoted several pages to a feature titled, simply, “Political Ohio,” paying tribute to the state’s place at the very heart of each and every national election.
