On June 23, 2011, law-enforcement agents swept into a building in Santa Monica, Calif., where they took a reportedly ailing 81-year-old man into custody.
No ordinary grandpa, this was James “Whitey” Bulger, the former head of Boston’s vicious White Hill Gang and a suspect in 21 murders. He’d been on the run for 16 years, and was a longtime member of the FBI’s Most Wanted list. According to reports, he was brought down because of his girlfriend’s penchant for regular teeth cleanings and beauty-parlor treatments.
